With years of analyzing, teaching, and publishing about literature as a PhD in French literature, my expertise in academic editing and the arts and humanities is informed by a love for language and a passion for good writing and formatting. Beyond my fluency in French and Italian and publications on French theater and postcolonial studies, my background in French, Italian, literary theory, pedagogy, and intercultural communication is useful for many projects. A former professor, I enjoy contributing to academia by perfecting the writing and content of researchers. My first editing job, technically speaking, was the menu of our family's Italian restaurants – and the joy I take in correcting writing has not diminished in the years since! If your content needs formatting, development, or polishing, I am your type-woman.

Domenica Newell-Amato, PhD

Copy Editor

With a PhD, a Professional Certificate in Editing (UC Berkeley), and 15 years of experience teaching grammar as a language professor, I have a sharp eye for making writing pristine. I tighten the flow, strengthen the author’s voice, and ensure consistency throughout. I polish grammar, punctuation, and mechanics, all the while ensuring perfect formatting. I was trained with the trusty editorial canon, Chicago Manual of Style (a treasure trove for those who appreciate language rules and variations) on hand. I am fluent in Chicago style and know MHRA, Harvard, MLA, and APA styles.

Academic copy editing/indexing: With a PhD in French literature from Emory University (2009), I am deeply grounded in academic writing. I have copy edited manuscripts and bibliographies in deaf culture, political science, art history, media studies, literary theory, women’s studies, education, geriatrics, psychology, psychiatry, African studies, Hindu/Jewish/Catholic studies, philosophy, and so on. I love being the ongoing copy editor for Cambridge University Press’s a) History in Africa, b) Church History, c) Nationalities Papers, d) Revue canadienne de science politique, and e) Revue canadienne du vieillissement, as well as Penn Press’s Journal for Early Modern Cultural Studies. As a freelance copy editor, I copy edit and index manuscripts for clients publishing with university presses. A rare breed, I relish compiling bibliographies and formatting notes.

Intercultural memoirs and books on local history: I have special experience copy editing intercultural memoirs and local history manuscripts, as well as coaching authors through a localized platform-building process.

French-English Translation

A PhD in French literature, I have translated books, articles, and periodicals out of French for researchers. I translated content for Mood of the Moment: Gaby Aghion and Chloé, a gorgeous book with Yale University Press and the Jewish Museum of NY. I did archival research and translation of turn-of-the-century Belgian newspaper articles and business letters for The Guns of John Moses Browning, with Simon & Schuster. I translated a book on the Jewish mikveh in Religious studies, as well as chapteres/articles in anthropology, women’s studies, and postcolonial history. I copy edit two French-language Canadian journals with Cambridge University Press: Revue canadienne de science politique and Revue canadienne du vieillissement. I copy edit academic manuscripts in French for academic clients and copy edited Défi Francophone, a college-level French multimedia textbook, for Klett World Languages.

Copy editing non-native English writing: The daughter of an immigrant, I have a long history of – and appreciation for – polishing the writing of non-native English speakers.

I enjoy collaborating with clients and creating elegant website content for business professionals, artists, and universities. I use my research and artistic skills, critical thinking as a PhD, and SEO knowledge to represent the contributions you bring to your field for your ideal audience. In line with your goals, I write thoughtful, sophisticated content, adding an organic balance of word, media, image.

With a publication record in print, video, and web, I bring complex ideas to a practical, engaging level. Using classical notions of word and image, I create social media blasts for world-class musicians, educational blog posts for wellness groups, and attractive newsletters for food suppliers. I have written web content for New York State Bridge Authority, holistic health markets, authors, world-class musicians, interior designers, psychologists, chef-owned restaurants, and academic departments.
